Red Wings torched Senators,as they scored four goals,in first period,and Johan Franzen scored a hat trick... he has scored twelve goals,in eight career games,against Ottawa,including a five goal night,against the Senators,in 2011(noted earlier in blog,in 2011)... Bobby Ryan scored his fourth goal in four games,against the Red Wings this season,for the only score for the Senators... unfortunately,the game was 5-0,Red Wings,at the time... the Senators came out flatter than a pancake,and the Red Wings sliced and diced them up,in the first period,scoring four goals(game was over,basically at the point),as the Senators showed frustration time after time,in last two periods,by trying to bully the Red Wings over and over... Franzen scored two goals of the hat trick,in 1:59,of game time,in the first period(he blew open game,at the point),and then scored the first goal of the second period,at the 3:49 mark,to go up,5-0,in game,and for the hat trick...

Red Wings 2,Canadiens 1,overtime... Red Wings played a near-perfect defensive game,until Brian Gionta,for the Canadiens put a beautiful backhand past Red Wings' goaltender Jimmy Howard,with twenty nine seconds left,in regulation... in overtime,both teams took a penalty,and played a rare three on three for two solid minutes,and then Gustav Nyquist,who has scored ten goals in last eleven games,put the puck past Canadiens' goaltender Peter Budaj,with twenty eight seconds left,in overtime,for only their second win of the season,when scoring two goals,or less... the Red Wings are 2-8-2,with those factors in mind... Todd Bertuzzi scored a power play goal,for the Red Wings,in the first period that did almost look like the game winning goal,until Gionta tied,in last thirty seconds,of regulation... it looked like a heartbreak,for a moment,in Montreal... A BIG WIN,AND TWO POINTS!!!!!!!!

my opinion:the next two games for the Red Wings are critical for their chances for the playoffs,because they are six points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs,who is in their own division,but Columbus,Ottawa,and Washington are all one point behind the Red Wings for the fight for the eighth spot(second wild card spot),in the Eastern Conference... Red Wings,right now,are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference... the first three teams in all divisions automatically make,and two wild card teams,in both conferences,also make the Stanley Cup playoffs...

Selanne,of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks,was spectacular,in his last Olympic hockey game... Finland scored two goals,in eleven seconds,in second period,and then scored three other goals,in four shots,midway into the third period... the USA team did not score a goal,in last two games,as the team ran out of gas... all three Finnish team goals,in third period,were on the power play... Pam Am 103 was blown up,over the town,on December 21,1988,killing everyone on board(270 people,including eleven on the ground)... why bring that up???,because Lockerbie is also famous for something very unique:in a town of 4,000,there are actually three Olympic medalists,all from Sochi,Russia... in the sport of curling,Lockerbie,Scotland is a curling power... David Murdoch,Anna Sloan,and Claire Hamilton all won Olympic medals-Murdoch won silver,Sloan and Hamilton bronze,and all three were coached by Marion Murdoch,David's mother,and as a side note:David's father,and sister Matt Murdoch,and Nancy Murdoch,were national champions for Scotland,and David and his brother,Neil won an European Curling Championship,for Scotland,in 2003,and David Murdoch won two more European Curling Championships,for Scotland,in 2007,and 2008...

Red Wings' captain Henrik Zetterberg underwent back surgery,and is out from eight weeks to an indefinite term of absence... my opinion:i have seen reports on the time that he will be out,and both have been mentioned... he will have doctors look at his recovery from the surgery,in eight weeks...

Pavel Datsyuk was on the Russian national team,and probably will be ready for the Red Wings' game,against the Montreal Canadiens,on February 26th,2014... if Sweden makes the Olympic hockey final,the Red Wings on their national team will,most likely,miss the game,against the Canadiens,and possibly,against the Ottawa Senators,on February 27,2014...

USA 3,Russia 2,shootout... T.J. Oshie was four of six shootout goals,as he scored game winning shootout goal... IIHF rules allow the same player to shoot in the shootout,after the first three players shoot,unlike NHL rules... for the Russians,Pavel Datsyuk,of the Red Wings scored both regulation goals for the team... a Russian goal was disallowed late in the third period,as USA goaltender Jonathan Quick used a trick he used,in the NHL,to dislodge the goal post,right before Russla scored... the Russian head coach did say that it was a mistake by the referees,but was classy in the comments after the game... IIHF rules say that if net is dislodged,there is no goal... NHL rules have some leeway in that situation...

bad news for the Red Wings?

Red Wings' captain Henrik Zetterberg is out of the Olympics for Sweden,because of a herniated disc(the injury that has ailed him most of the season)... knowing that the NHL season starts back,on February 25th(Red Wings play on the 26th,and 27th,against Montreal Canadiens,and Ottawa Senators,respectively),i expect him to play sometime in March...

the Red Wings are in the second wild card playoff spot(eighth place),based on games played over the Philadelphia Flyers... the Red Wings have played gritty,and rather well over the past fifteen games,especially on team defense... one opposing team broadcaster (i believe it was Eddie Olczyk,of NBC,who i really do not like,because he also does play by play duties,for the local Chicago Blackhawks' channel)said that their team were playing the Grand Rapids Griffiths,basically,in the Winged Wheel's sweaters... that was a snide,and pointless remark... however,the Red Wings has had eight to ten players on the injured list,basically,most of the season,so they have been undermanned all season... most of the players will be back after the Olympic break,even though,Pavel Datsyuk wants to play a couple of games,before the break,but probably will not play,until after the break... playing in the Eastern Conference does make it easier for the Red Wings to make the Stanley Cup playoffs,but there are a few tough teams to play,and they honestly can not lose too many games,after the Olympic Break,and getting players back will help...
