commentary...

when NHL players had a draft to seed their All- Star teams, earlier this week, for tomorrow's NHL All Star game, the first pick, overall, was the Detroit Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk... if you like the Olympics, you may want to watch, but i love hockey, and great skaters, but the All-Star game,in most sports,is as fun as watching paint dry... the only interesting thing to watch tomorrow will be the way that NHL players score goals, and see if the goaltenders can make some great saves,too...

Friday, January 27, 2012

NHL news...

Pavel Datsyuk, and Jimmy Howard were chosen,as teammates,on Team Chara, when NHL All-Star Game goes off,on Sunday... both teams are captained,by Zdeno Chara,of the Boston Bruins, and Daniel Alfredsson,of the Ottawa Senators...

commentary...

last night's game, against Montreal, was not a game that i liked to watch, because Red Wings were, literally,on mental vacation, because they did absolutely nothing until third period, when they were down,6-0,and i am upset, with the effort... basically, they gave two points,to Montreal... the last time they gave up four goals,in a period,to Montreal, was in the Stanley Cup winning years of 1997-1998,so i do not think it happens too often... the Red Wings better come back from the All-Star break, quite upset, because Mike Babcock(Red Wings' coach)will remind them of this fiasco...

NHL news...

NHL All-Star game,Sunday...

game score...

Montreal Canadians 7,Red Wings 2...

commentary...

Nicklas Lidstrom had played in 213 straight regular season games, going to back to last game,in Chicago,in 2009 season(he had sore elbow)... he did miss two games,in 2009 playoffs, due to injury(his only two in almost twenty years, off playoff experience)... he was forced to miss a game, due to missing(opting out of)2009 All-Star game,on Jan 27,2009(one game suspension),so Lidstrom does not miss too many games...

game in progress...

Montreal Canadiens 4,Red Wings 0,after one period... it looks like Red Wings are looking forward to All-Star break, one game early... Jimmy Howard has been torched for all four goals, including two,in 2:35,and one,in last 27 seconds,so i expect that Ty Conklin(backup goaltender)may be in,at start of second period... the Red Wings really stink tonight,period... only game score later....

little known fact...

Nicklas Lidstrom, for the most part, does not speak English,at his house,in Detroit... his family speaks Swedish, for his family to be bilingual, and get used to living in Sweden, which he will do,when he retires, from the NHL...

correction...

the name of the NBC Sports show, featuring Nicklas Lidstrom, tonight,is titled,"NHL 36"...

commentary...

Red Wings' Nicklas Lidstrom may not play tonight, against Montreal;no injury, but if you count the fact that he left the morning skate, with symptoms of the flu,he is not feeling well... get well,Nicklas... NBC Sports is featuring Lidstrom,in a program,"NBC Sports 36",in which they follow him for 36 hours,tonight... some people think of him,as the best defenseman in NHL history... i do,but honestly,i never saw Bobby Orr,or Doug Harvey, play, and i may be biased towards Lidstrom... if i had to be objective,i would rank Orr first,Harvey,a close second, and Lidstrom a very close third, behind Harvey... something like number one(Orr),number 2(Harvey),and number 2a(Lidstrom)... the fact is if you had to build a near- perfect defensive unit, all three would be on my team...

funny story...

former Red Wings' grinder Darren McCarty got a job, with American Jewelry, and Loan, the pawn shop, featured on Tru TV,in "Hardcore Pawn"... odd career choice, but recently,he tried to pawn a 14 foot stuffed alligator, for cash and store credit... way to go,Darren!!!!!

commentary...

going into All-Star break,Red Wings are number one,in NHL,with 67 points... they have one game to play before the All-Star break, against Montreal,in Montreal(the only game on today, and last game before the break)... they are one point ahead,of the New York Rangers, and have a two point lead,in the Central Division, over St. Louis, and three points over Nashville, and Chicago...

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

correction...

i noted earlier that the record for NHL consecutive home wins was twenty straight wins... the teams who have done the feat was the Boston Bruins,of 1929-1930,and the Philadelphia Flyers,of 1975-1976... i noted that it was the Flyers,of 1974-1975,not 1975-1976... i had to correct the record... the Flyers did win the Stanley Cup both of those years(1974-1975,and 1975-1976)...

comments...

reading some Blues' fans comments after the 3-1 loss,to the Red Wings, tonight, was hilarious, because some fans go overboard with the passion, but hockey is a game, not life,or death, and it is a very beautiful game......

game score,and commentary...

Red Wings 3,Blues 1... 30th win for Jimmy Howard, and record of 33-15-1,overall... seventeen straight wins at home, and seven straight wins,overall... after a sluggish first period, and a 1-0 Blues' lead,Red Wings clamped down, and started to play Red Wings' hockey, and the Red Wings are tops in NHL,with 67 points, and one game,in Montreal, left before All-Star Break, they will be tough to beat,so far... Pavel Datsyuk, and Johan Franzen scored goals,in second period,to erase the Blues' 1-0 lead, and then Niklas Kronwall scored,in third period,to put game on ice... the Blues tried to bully the Red Wings throughout the game, including a team scrum,in which many Blues' players tried to grab Howard's mask, and give him an old fashioned face wash, with a smelly glove,or two, with a second and a half, left in game...

trivia...

Red Wings' defensemen have scored 32 goals, which leads NHL...

schedule...

St. Louis Blues/Red Wings,tonight... game is for first place,in Central Division, and top spot in NHL...

NHL news...

inactive Boston Bruins' player Marc Savard is still suffering concussion-like symptoms, and has not played in exactly one year, but still believes that he will be able to play,in near-future... however most pundits think that his NHL career is over... my opinion is i just hope that he has a good life...

comments and odd facts...

St. Louis Blues/Red Wings,tomorrow... odd fact:Red Wings have won six in a row,but five of the six games have been decided in a shootout,or overtime... they have beaten their last three opponents,3-2,all in shootout(Dallas Stars,Phoenix Coyotes,Columbus Blue Jackets)... in fact, except for a 5-0 shutout of Buffalo Sabres, they have also beaten Chicago Blackhawks, and to start off their six game winning streak, they beat Phoenix, and Chicago,by what score, you guessed it,3-2? four of the six wins, have been shootout wins, except the game, against the Blackhawks, which was won in overtime...
tomorrow's game, will be for first place in the Central Division, and maybe the NHL... the Blues need to beat Red Wings in regulation,to claim first place, any other way they beat them,in shootout,or overtime, means the Red Wings keep first place, because of number of wins, and Red Wings have won sixteen games in a row,at home, and the game is in Detroit...

update...

according to a source at TSN(Canadian ESPN),there will be no suspension of Red Wings' Henrik Zetterberg, because the NHL believes that the shove that Zetterberg, gave the Blue Jackets' player(Nikita Nikitin, what a name!!!),into the boards,on a race for touch of puck, for a icing call, was not intentional, but a tragic accident... hope he is all right...

2013 Winter Classic...

as noted earlier, the 2013 Winter Classic will be Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings,at "the Big House",at University of Michigan,on Jan 1st,2013,or thereabouts... Red Wings wanted Comerica Park,in Detroit, but the NHL overruled them, because attendance would be better... the official announcement will be after the NHL All-Star Game, and when Red Wings will be at home, for a extended period of time... there will be events at Comerica Park,to soothe the Red Wings, like a collegiate outdoor game,or an American Hockey League game there...

Saturday, January 21, 2012

game score and commentary...

Red Wings 3,Blue Jackets 2,shootout win... 29th victory for Jimmy Howard... Red Wings killed off 3:30 of a major five minute penalty,on Henrik Zetterberg, who slightly pushed a Blue Jackets' player in back,as he stumbled into boards, and did a split leg crunch, into boards(rule book:defenseless player, may get him suspended)... Red Wings were on a power play at time... sixteen home wins in a row...

game score...

Vancouver Canucks 4,San Jose Sharks 3...

KHL All-Star Game results...

in Riga,Latvia,earlier today,team Fedorov beat team Ozolins,15-11... team captains,for both teams;Sergei Fedorov,and Sandis Ozolins(in NHL,he lengthened his name)won Stanley Cup(Fedorov,with Detroit Red Wings,and Ozolins,with Colorado Avalanche)...

comment...

on Saturdays,NHL starts early, but the majority of games starts at 7pm. Eastern, including Hockey Night in Canada, except,in February, when Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, broadcasts Hockey Day in Canada, when most Canadian teams play each other(now with Winnipeg being the seventh Canadian team,i do not know how that will work out)...

Friday, January 20, 2012

Central Division standings,and major comment...

Chicago Blackhawks 64 points...
Detroit Red Wings 63 points...
St. Louis Blues 62 points...
Nashville Predators 58 points...
Columbus Blue Jackets 31 points...
but Detroit leads NHL,in total wins,with 31,and Jimmy Howard has 28 wins,in net,and reason that Chicago leads,is overtime losses(they have 6 overtime losses to Detroit's 1)

schedule update...

Columbus Blue Jackets/Red Wings tomorrow... Columbus is 15th,in Western Conference, but their first win,of 2011-2012 season, was against Red Wings, but they have won only 12 other games, since then...

NHL news...

New Jersey Devils acquired Alexei Ponikarovsky,in a trade,from Carolina Hurricanes,after he played 12:04,for Carolina,in a 3-0 win,over Washington Capitals...

commentary...

Red Wings wore Phoenix down, and beat a team,in the Coyotes that has won only three,of their last fourteen games, last night... the hero last night was Todd Bertuzzi, who scored his 299th NHL goal, during game,to tie game at 2,and a spinning backhand in shootout,to win fifth straight game, and even record on road,at 13,apiece... not the Red Wings' best game, but a game that showed NHL,and the team, that you need to win games, against teams that are struggling... the Red Wings have been struggling on the road, and simply unbelievable at home, just the opposite, from last year... from February 6th,this year on,the vast majority of games will be at Joe Louis Arena(18 of last 28 games, will be at JLA;that includes a four game road trip that starts in Nashville, and goes to California),most of the games in the Eastern time zone... so going into the playoffs, they should be rested, but again, where have i heard that before...

commentary...

the Red Wings scored two goals,in 1:32,in first period, and scored two more goals,in :13 apart,in second period,in a 5-0 rout of the Buffalo Sabres... five different players scored, for Red Wings... Henrik Zetterberg,Johan Franzen, and Nicklas Lidstrom scored in first period, and then Todd Bertuzzi, and Darren Helm scored in second period,to go up,5-0,after two periods, chasing Sabres' goaltender Ryan Miller,in the process... Pavel Datsyuk had a three point night, with three assists(including his 700th point),and Todd Bertuzzi had a goal, and two assists, also a three point night,so it was a very good night, for their franchise record 15th straight home win...

game score and comment...

Red Wings 5,Sabres 0... tied Boston Bruins,1973-1974,for fifth all-time,with fifteen home wins in row... record:20 straight home wins, shared by Boston Bruins,in 1929-1930,and Philadelphia Flyers,in 1974-1975... Jimmy Howard's fifth shutout of year, and he leads NHL,with 27 wins...

Todd Bertuzzi scored two goals, including game winner in overtime, where Red Wings out-shot Blackhawks,9-0,and 43-27,in game... Red Wings killed off a critical four minute double minor, midway through the third period... Jimmy Howard had a goof behind the net, when he passed the puck,to an open spot of the ice, instead of passing the puck,to Brad Stuart, over his left shoulder, and Andrew Shaw, for the Blackhawks, tapped it into an empty net,in second period, and the Blackhawks tied game,at two, with just under 52 seconds,in regulation, when Jonathan Toews tipped puck past Howard on a shot,by Marian Hossa... Tomas Holmstrom scored opening goal,as Red Wings scored two goals,in 3:14,of time,in first period... what a game!!!!!!!

Thursday, January 12, 2012

commentary...

the Red Wings have been very odd this season... they have won thirteen games in a row,as of this posting,at Joe Louis Arena, but can not seem to find the touch of winning,on the road, away from JLA,losing to teams that they simply should beat, and do it regularly... last season, they were the best road team in the NHL,and they have a chance to improve that record, this season... they beat Chicago,in overtime, the other night,3-2,then fall on their faces,in New York, and lose to the lowly Islanders,5-1(not to put down the Islanders, but they should be better than 14th in the Eastern Conference)... Red Wings are a balanced offensive team, and Jimmy Howard,is a stud in net,as goaltender, because every night it seems like someone different is chipping in to win,but then they seem like to be lost sheep, because they come up with efforts like the Islanders' game, which may have been the worst game that they have played, overall, this season,period... so i watch every game and still wonder what team i will see... tonight, for example,Pavel Datsyuk, and Henrik Zetterberg scored shootout goals(Zetterberg the winner)... Datsyuk won the game, with Chicago,in overtime, with a bank shot, off a Blackhawks' player, and into the net, from absolute zero angle, and how that puck went in was simply amazing... Zetterberg won the game, with Phoenix, tonight, with puck drag move, that basically left the goaltender, and Zetterberg sliding one way,the stick, and the puck being tapped in,on other side of net... Jiri Hudler,Valtteri Flippula,Johan Franzen,Niklas Kronwall,Ian White, and Nicklas Lidstrom have all been big parts of the team, this season, and the most valuable player of the team,so far,has to be Jimmy Howard, because without his stellar play in net, this team has no rudder, and yet the player that holds everything together,is Lidstrom... the seven-time Norris Trophy winner may be the best defenseman that it has been my honor, and pleasure to watch... he is not perfect,on the ice,but he makes so few mistakes that it seems like he does not play hard, but he leads by example, and at the end of night,he plays 23-25 minutes a game, and the guy he is defending all night becomes very frustrated, and has few good shifts on ice, because he covers him like a blanket, and then goes back on two on one rushes by other team, and very rarely gets burned by opponent's moves, because it seems like he simply knows what to do with stick, and opponent...

game score,and commentary...

Red Wings 3,Coyotes 2,shootout win... Jimmy Howard won his 100th game in net,and Henrik Zetterberg had a beautiful, breathtaking, and highlight reel shootout goal,to win it for Red Wings(have to see it to believe it)... they tie the 2006-2007 Red Wings, for second place, with thirteen wins,in a row,at home... the Red Wings' record for consecutive home wins,in a season,is fourteen wins, set in 1964-1965... the 1996-1997 Red Wings team had two twelve game home winning streaks, that season...

schedule update...

Phoenix Coyotes/Red Wings,tonight...

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

commentary...

halfway into this NHL season(game 42),the Red Wings seem to be a very good team most nights, but last night disturbed me no end,losing,5-1,to the New York Islanders,in New York, where the Red Wings have not won,in FIVE years(i repeat, five years)... the game would not bother me so much, but it was the total lack of effort,on everyone's part, and to use the excuse of three games,in four nights,is basic hogwash, because the Islanders have been at,or near, the bottom,of the Eastern Conference, for years, and the goaltender was their backup,Evgeni Nabokov, who was signed,by the Red Wings, last season, but was claimed by the Islanders, off waivers, because he came back from the KHL,last season, and had to go through waivers, before getting back into NHL... watching the game, last night, for a fan,was terrible, and the effort was rather disgusting, for a team, who fought for first place,in Central Division, and was second in Western Conference, before puck drop, last night... there have been games this season(not too many)that Red Wings seem disinterested in playing, and unfortunately last night was a blown chance,to stamp out how good this team could be,because they have been very streaky,in wins, and losses... when they win, they look like the best team in NHL,and when they lose, they look like they can not hit a side of a barn with a puck, from two inches away, which means that they simply stink, and recently,in last eleven games, they are 6-5,so who is this year's Red Wings? are they the team who absolutely blew chunks all over New York, last night,or are they the team that beat Chicago,in dramatic fashion(in overtime),the other night... like Mike Babcock said earlier,is it time to stand up and be counted,or is it time,to totally collapse, and be just an average team.... i bet 23 members of the team would say,"Stand Up,and Be Counted"... which team is it,BOYS!!!!!!

trivia...

Hall of Fame member Terry Sawchuk recorded his first shutout, for the Red Wings,of his 103 shutouts, blanking New York Rangers,1-0,on January 15,1950...

Red Wings/New York Islanders,tonight... Red Wings will try to break a three game losing streak,at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, tonight to keep pace, with the Chicago Blackhawks, and the St. Louis Blues... NHL news...

Patrick Sharp,of the Chicago Blackhawks, will be sidelined three or four weeks, with the dreaded,"upper body",injury...

Sunday, January 8, 2012

game score,and commentary...

Red Wings 3,Blackhawks 2... honestly, the Blackhawks out-played Red Wings most of the night, but an overtime winning goal,by Pavel Datsyuk that was shot from behind the goal line, into an empty net(players were in a scrum,at bottom of net)... referees gave Blackhawks a penalty shot, midway through third period, but Ty Conklin stopped the shot(the same referee gave Toronto one last night, against the Red Wings)... i could not believe it!!!! that is the second penalty shot for the Blackhawks, against the Red Wings,in the two games played between the teams, this season, both in Chicago... they basically stole the game, from the Blackhawks,in last five minutes,of game, and in overtime(scoring last two goals of game,in last five minutes,of game, and then Datsyuk's magic, with the puck)...

injury update,and comments...

Darren Helm, and Tomas Holmstrom(both out with groin injuries)may play tonight, against Chicago, and Ty Conklin will play in net,for Red Wings... both Chicago, and Detroit are chasing the St. Louis Blues,in Central Division,so this is a important game, and if Detroit wins game, they will lead Central Division, for,at least,tonight... Chicago is a point behind St. Louis, and Detroit is two points, behind St. Louis...

schedule update...

Red Wings/Chicago Blackhawks,tonight...

correction...

Jarome Iginla is the captain of the Calgary Flames, right now....

500 goals,for Jarome...

Jarome Iginla scored his 500th goal,of his NHL career, last night, against Minnesota Wild... Congrats,Jarome!!!!!!!!! a true class act of a player...

Saturday, January 7, 2012

game score,and commentary...

Maple Leafs 4,Red Wings 3... Red Wings tied game,at 3,early in the third period, but Joffrey Lupul stole an outlet pass deep in Red Wings' defensive zone, and flipped the puck over Jimmy Howard's head, for game winner, for Toronto... Red Wings played worst period this season, giving up three easy goals,in first thirteen minutes, hanging Howard out to dry,on two of the goals, which one was a penalty shot, and a basic tap-in goal, from a foot away, into an empty net, which Detroit made a valiant comeback from, but made one too many mistakes,in third period... Mike Babcock must be fuming...

game in progress...

Maple Leafs 3 Red Wings 0,after one period... i am watching Red Wings play Toronto, and everything is going Toronto's way,a questionable penalty shot(a hook,to side of Phil Kessel,on Ian White that did not interfere with shot, but was called by referee,as a penalty shot),and two other goals, that remind me of a ugly Red Wings' defenseless loss... what Red Wings' defense,so far?

Red Wings, and Blackhawks going different ways?

Avalanche 4,Blackhawks 0... Chicago has lost three in a row,and four of the last five games, and the Red Wings have won four,of the last five games,as of tonight... next game is against Red Wings, for Chicago, and Red Wings play Toronto, tomorrow, then Chicago,Sunday,in Chicago...

comment...

the current collective bargaining agreement(CBA)expires, after this season,so the rejection of the realignment plan,by the NHLPA,may signal a start to a tense negotiation,by the NHLPA...

BREAKING NEWS...

NHLPA rejects realignment plan,by NHL,for 2012-2013 season,so there will no change in NHL realignment, next season... what jerks!!!!!!!!

comment...

Red Wings play Toronto Maple Leafs,Saturday, then the Chicago Blackhawks,Sunday...
Chicago Blackhawks play Colorado Avalanche, tonight, then Red Wings,Sunday, their third game,in four days...
both teams should be tired, but i believe Chicago will be more tired in Sunday's third period, against Red Wings...

trivia...

on January 12,1980,the Hartford Whalers played the Red Wings,at the New(at that time)Joe Louis Arena... you may believe that i am stupid to note a meaningless regular season game... however, the game would be important to Red Wings' fans throughout the years... in the lineup, for the Whalers, that night, was Mark Howe(Hall of Fame, class of 2011),his brother Marty, and Red Wings' great,"Mr. Hockey",Gordie Howe... Gordie played for the Red Wings, from 1946,to 1971...

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

commentary...

Jiri Hudler scored two goals,as the Red Wings held off Dallas Stars,5-4,in a wild and frantic third period... Red Wings held four two goal leads(2-0,3-1,4-2,and 5-3)in game, but could not stop Dallas, from cutting lead to one, four different times, but Dallas could not get equalizer,at end of game... Red Wings played well enough on defense,to keep Dallas away from Jimmy Howard, who did not have his best game,in net,in last five minutes of game,as Dallas were kept to the fringes of the Red Wings' defensive zone, scraping around, for the puck... Dallas Stars' Michael Ryder scored two goals, including the two last goals,by Dallas, one with 5:53,left in game, but Dallas got no closer, than one... Red Wings are one point behind Chicago,in the NHL Central Division, and are two points, from being the top team in NHL,behind Chicago, and New York Rangers, and tied with Vancouver, but are fourth in Western Conference(the division leaders are the top three seeds,in NHL)...
