commentary...

going into All Star Break,Red Wings have a division lead of six points, over Nashville, and ten point lead, over Chicago(defending Stanley Cup Champions),who is tied for seventh seed, with San Jose, but the seventh seed,to the 12th seed(Calgary Flames),has a margin of three points, with Colorado,Minnesota, and Los Angeles,in between Calgary, and San Jose, who is tied, with Chicago,so Blackhawks are in deep trouble...

commentary,and analysis...

Red Wings scored early,1:43 into first period, when Darren Helm stole puck, and netted puck, with snap shot, past Martin Brodeur, and Brian Rolston, for the Devils, beat everybody to the puck,on a mad scramble,in front of net,for Devils' lone goal,6:35,into first period,to tie game, after one period, and Red Wings played very good defense the rest of game, and put on pressure on Devils' defense, the last two periods,by peppering Brodeur, with pucks, and keeping New Jersey,at bay,and off the score sheet... after Valtteri Filppula scored early in third period,(5:32,into third period)there was a feeling in Joe Louis Arena, the game was nearly over, because the Devils were last in scoring in NHL(averaging 2.0 goals/per game),and Red Wings were playing very, very good defense, knocking pucks away from the Devils' players, and getting turnovers,in neutral zone, and keeping the Devils,on the outside, and then blocking shots,in front of Jimmy Howard, and Howard stonewalled any shot, that the Devils got past the defense... to cap scoring,Johan Franen snapped puck, past Brodeur,in last minute,of game(19:16,into third period),when Red Wings were swarming the Devils,in their own zone, not allowing the Devils,a final mad dash,at Howard...

commentary...

All-Star Break, off until Feb 1st(NHL),and Detroit plays Ottawa,February 2nd... Red Wings should get Pavel Datsyuk, and Dan Cleary, back for game, against Ottawa, and Tomas Holmstrom is aiming for a return, for same game, but team reports say that he may play, against Columbus,or Nashville, later on in week... Red Wings are getting healthy,so i pity the NHL,after the All-Star Break...

commentary...

Pavel Datsyuk,Danny Cleary,Tomas Holmstrom, and even Mike Modano will be back sooner than later... the first three named plan on being back early after the All-Star break(all three suffered broken bones,Datsyuk, and Holmstrom, suffered broken hands,in basically back to back games, and Cleary suffered a fractured ankle, after getting hit by a puck shot,by,i believe,Brad Stuart, trying to literally jump out of the way of the puck),and Modano suffered a lacerated tendon, and nerve damage,to his wrist, when a Columbus Blue Jackets' player fell awkwardly, raising his leg,and skate,in a backwards ballerina kick, and cut Modano, just above the glove... he is scheduled to return in mid-March,but he says that it may be late February... even though Detroit is 5-4-1,in last ten games, not playing "Red Wings' hockey",as i put it,with four players, from their AHL (Grand Rapids Griffiths)team scoring their first NHL goals,(Jan Mursak,Tomas Tatar,Jacub Kindl, and Cory Emmerton),in their careers,in last three weeks, they have picked up much of the slack in scoring, and their efforts make Mike Babcock, and coaching staff happy... i honestly pity the NHL,because the Red Wings have been injured, basically for last six,or seven weeks, and only Vancouver, and Dallas, have been able to keep track of the Red Wings,in points race, for top spot,in Western Conference... funny thing is that both Dallas, and Vancouver lead their own divisions... Chicago, and Nashville have improved in Central Division... as of today,Nashville is four points behind Detroit, but has played one more game, and Detroit has two more wins... even with their 4-1 win Saturday morning(afternoon,in Chicago),Blackhawks are eight points behind(they have played one more game, too, and Detroit has three more wins than the Blackhawks)... Nashville plays Vancouver, tomorrow, while Detroit plays New Jersey tomorrow, and Chicago is fighting in the battle for eighth seed right now(being seventh seed, but Colorado,San Jose,Minnesota, and Los Angeles, are either tied,in case of Colorado,or are within three points of Chicago, and the Calgary Flames(right now,the 12th seed)are only four points, behind Chicago,so Chicago is not a lock for the playoffs, but should get there, but i will tell you this, they do not have enough grit in the third and fourth line, right now,to go far,and their goaltending, overall,is spotty,as in their backup(Marty Turco)who was brought in to shore up their goaltending, and has been a disappointment,in Chicago... for Chicago to be in the playoffs, they have to catch Nashville, because being third,in Central Division means that they may not make playoffs, and for a defending Stanley Cup champion, not to make playoffs,is an embarrassment... the last defending Stanley Cup Champions not to make the playoffs the next playing season, was the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning, who were the champions, when NHL strike hit in 2005... they were not in playoffs in 2006...

Red Wings' history...

on November 10,1963,Gordie Howe broke Maurice "Rocket" Richard's career goal-scoring record,by scoring his 545th goal(of 802),against Richard's former team, the Montreal Canadiens, and goaltender Charlie Hodge... the goal scoring record was broken,by Wayne Gretzky, late in the 1993-1994 season, with the Los Angeles Kings...

hockey news...

first trip for Saku Koivu,in Montreal, since he was signed by Anaheim, from Montreal... he was a long time captain, for Montreal... in fact,i cried when he returned to the lineup,in 2002,for the Canadiens, from cancer... he received an eight minute standing ovation, that night,in 2002... that night,i was a true hockey fan... just wonder what the fans will react... as he hit ice,he got a standing ovation... there are signs in crowd thanking him for his service... his line will start game, for Ducks... in fact,he was shown up on big screen,as the national anthems were sung... he waved his stick,as fans gave a rousing standing ovation to him...

Red Wings' game score, and analysis of game...

Blackhawks 4,Red Wings 1... Red Wings gave up over twenty scoring chances,on defense, and simply got outplayed,by Blackhawks... Babcock must not be too happy, with the effort put up,by Red Wings,lately... they are 5-4-1,in January, but the good news is that they, going into today's game, they had a six point lead,on Nashville, and now eight,on Chicago,in Central Division, and winners in division, gets one of top three spots, and a home playoff series... they did not play well, but no excuses... they will play better... GO RED WINGS GO!!!!!!!!!

Red Wings' history...

the score in first Red Wings' franchise win, over Chicago, was 1-0,at Chicago,on November 24,1926,as the Detroit Cougars...

game in progress--2nd period

Blackhawks 3,Red Wings 1... good game... Blackhawks have out-played Red Wings, but referees are not having a good day, because a referee called a goal,on Red Wings, but replays showed that puck hit crossbar, and was called no goal,by Toronto, and then Henrik Zetterberg scored a goal, but it was disallowed, because the referee was not in the right spot, and then Chicago scored their third goal... Tomas Kopecky has scored twice for Blackhawks... they are rushing the net on Jimmy Howard, and Red Wings' defense around has sucked,period... Cory Emmerton, has scored his first NHL goal,in his first NHL game,to open up scoring for Red Wings... Blackhawks are 2 for 2 on power play, and yet,Red Wings' best period, this season, has been the third period...

Red Wings' history...

Today's matchup between Red Wings, and Blackhawks,is game number 712,between both teams... first Red Wings' franchise win, against Blackhawks, was November 24,1926,when the Red Wings were known,as the Detroit Cougars, after NHL formed, and Detroit businessmen bought the Victoria(B.C.) Cougars,of the Western Hockey League, who had won the Stanley Cup,and were the last team,to win Stanley Cup,in the pre-NHL days...

NHL news,and Red Wings' news...

Red Wings sign Evgeni Nabokov,to an one year,$570,000 deal, but must clear waivers... will talk of him,if he is not claimed on waivers, like Mike Babcock...

commentary,and analysis...

game started very good for Red Wings, who scored first three goals, and played very good defense for first two periods, allowing only one goal, until the Blues got rolling in third period... unfortunately, the Red Wings got sloppy in third period, but the goals, scored by St. Louis, were not soft goals let in by Jimmy Howard, and that was a positive, but the goals were just very beautiful,as a true hockey fan... the Central Division plays very tough, and close games,so the comeback,by the Blues, was expected,by me... they played an zero-zero tie,in the past, and they do not like each other,so teams in the Red Wings' division, for the most part, play high-scoring games, but do know how to play defense... the Blues do not have enough firepower to regularly beat Red Wings, but they know how to scrape, and dig,for goals in front of the net,and the fact that it is the Red Wings playing the Blues makes it a total fight, and the Blues have had real pests,to irritate the Red Wings, over the years... Chris Osgood, and Manny Legace have played for the Blues,in goal, after playing for the Red Wings,so they know each other so well... there were no power play goals, and honestly, there were only three power plays, between both teams, last night, which is unusual for both teams, but honestly, both teams were very dinged up,by injuries... Detroit scored three goals(Patrick Eaves,in first period,Todd Bertuzzi, and Jakub Kindl-his first NHL goal, both in second period),then St. Louis scored three goals(T.J. Oshie,in the second period,Patrik Berglund, and David Backes,in third period, forcing overtime),and then 1:51 into overtime,Darren Helm scored the overtime winner, for Red Wings' 4-3 win... very strong game,by both teams, and a fun game to watch...

Penguins 4,Red Wings 1... UGLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SLEEPWALKED THROUGH GAME...

game in progress--2nd period

Penguins 3,Red Wings 1,after two periods... no excuses... worst defensive game,of year... Pittsburgh has scored all three goals,on turnovers, and a penalty shot, and misplayed puck,by Joey MacDonald... i am so upset with Red Wings' play that i keep putting blogpost on wrong blog-my mistake.... giving up ten goals in last four first periods,in last four games... they have played like the Keystone Kops, the last four games,on defense,,, Mike Babcock must be pulling out his hair... Pittsburgh announcers must be wishing for 2009,because they keep on playing highlights of 2009 Stanley Cup Finals, during timeouts, and commercials... my comment about that is that it was eighteen months ago,and it is not the same team that it was in 2009... what a joke!!!!!!!!! Pittsburgh has out-played Red Wings, period, tonight, but it is not the playoffs, but a regular season game, and they again play March 21st,in Joe Louis Arena... both teams will be in playoffs,so game means just two points, and Red Wings have played like they are sleepwalking tonight...

Red Wings' history...

Jack Adams served as coach,of the Detroit Cougars,Detroit Falcons,and,finally,the Detroit Red Wings,from 1927-1928,to 1962-1963(same franchise,for 35 years)...

NHL,and Red Wings history...

Detroit holds NHL record for wins,in one season,when they won 62 times,in a 82-game season(they had 131 points),in 1995-1996,but is second in season points to Montreal,who won 60 games,but lost only eight games,in one season(in 1976-1977,and they had 132 points that season)...

Red Wings',and NHL history...

Normie Smith holds record for longest streak of playoff shutout hockey(248 minutes,32 seconds),including a game, against the Montreal Maroons, which lasted into sixth overtime(time:176 minutes,30 seconds),a 1-0 win,on March 24,1936-noted before in blog... the player who scored the goal was Mud Bruneteau(noted before, too,i believe),a rookie, for the Red Wings... record has lasted for 75 years, this March 24th...

Sunday, January 16, 2011

commentary...

many of the goals, last night, bounced in off opposing players, for both teams... basically a game of pinball on ice, because Detroit had two goals go in off opposing players, from behind the goal line, and the net,but Columbus had the same thing happen to Detroit, when they shot the puck, and it was not a very pretty game to play,if you were a player, but very fun to watch, even if Red Wings would have lost game, but they won it,in overtime... the first two goals,by both teams ricocheted off players, and the wall behind Detroit's net(in Columbus's two goals);the first goal went in,after going off the back dasher behind the net,and bounced out in front of net to a Blue Jackets' player(Derick Brassard),and second went in off a Red Wings' player's knee, behind Joey MacDonald, then Detroit got in gear, with two strange goals, late in first period, and the pinball game was on,between them...

commentary...

Columbus scored two goals,in opening 4:12,of game, but Detroit came back with two goals,in 1:46,at end of first period, and it was an old-fashioned shootout(80's Edmonton Oilers' era)... very few of the stars scored goals, except Rick Nash, who scored the final goal,in regulation, that forced overtime... eleven players scored goals;third and fourth line names,on score sheet... it was the type of game that proved the point that hockey is a team game, because every player on each team joined in with a hit,or a point,it seemed... Columbus, then Detroit took control of game's tempo, and then Detroit ended it with an overtime goal,by Johan Franzen,45 seconds into overtime... a fun game to watch!!!!!!!!!!

Red Wings' game score...

Red Wings 6,Blue Jackets 5,overtime win... Johan Franzen scored his 19th goal,45 seconds into overtime... analysis, tomorrow morning...

correction-injury update...

Tomas Holmstrom got hit with a puck,in third period last night, against Blue Jackets, and then fell to the ice,and that is way that he broke his hand...

commentary...

Columbus came out strong, and dominated first period, scored two goals(last two games,Detroit outscored 6-2,in first period),so Mike Babcock must be very upset, with the way that the Red Wings, are playing, right now... in fact, the Red Wings have played in first periods, most of year, like bull, but the third period, has been very good, most of year,so it evens out,and yet,i am getting upset with the way the Red Wings, have played in first period,overall... they have not been "on time",playing flat, for minutes at time... i know the Red Wings are one of the best teams,in NHL,but right now, they are short-handed,and dinged-up,like most teams,so i am not upset with their overall play, but i just wish they would come out with a little more fire in their bellies... Detroit played much better in last two periods,of last night's game, scoring two goals early, and midway,in second period, and then played very good defense,in front of Joey MacDonald, who came in for an slightly injured Jimmy Howard(bruised knee),and only allowed one shootout goal, the rest of game,in a 3-2 shootout loss,to the Blue Jackets...

injury update...

this is the 500th blogpost:Tomas Holmstrom broke his hand, when he fell in third period, against Columbus, last night... Jimmy Howard is day to day, with bruised knee, suffered,in same game...

Friday, January 14, 2011

injury update...

Mike Modano is doing on-ice conditioning, and surgery on his wrist tendon, that was slashed,by a Columbus Blue Jackets' player, earlier in season,in a freak accident, when the player's skate got up,and cut Modano just above the glove, went very well, and "is responding to exercise",and he should be back, shortly after the All-Star break...

Red Wings' trivia...

Ted Lindsay,Gordie Howe,and Sid Abel,were called,"the Production Line",for the Red Wings,in the 1950's...

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

side note...

they lost,6-5,to the Buffalo Sabres,on March 27,1990,as a side note,to last blogpost...

commentary...

Red Wings lost last night, because of a four goal outburst,in first period,by Colorado... they got out-played by Avalanche,in first two periods... the four goal outburst, against Detroit, was in 8:17,of time,of the first period---the second fastest four goal outburst, against Red Wings, since 1987-1988... fastest four goal outburst, was done in a game,by the Buffalo Sabres, against Detroit,in 7:24,of time,on March 27,1990(had to watch replay of game, for that nugget of trivia)... Jan Mursak scored his first goal,of his NHL career,to open up scoring for Red Wings, but Matt Duchene scored two goals(he has 5 goals in games, against Detroit, with 2 two goal games-the last two games, and he scored his first NHL goal,at Joe Louis Arena, last year)... all Avalanche goals were even-strength... they lead NHL,in that category... Red Wings' defense sucked, big time, hanging Jimmy Howard out to dry,on three of the four goals that he allowed,on ten shots, turning puck over and over,in their own zone, and throughout the entire rink... Howard got pulled in first period, and actually was not credited with the loss-Joey MacDonald was-for allowing fifth goal,in second period, but no one on the Red Wings' roster played well(i would say something different, but i do not want to be banned, but you get my point)... the only thing that i can say that is good about the game that the loss was only the second in regulation, when scoring four goals,or more,in last 43 games, and the Red Wings had won the last six road games... the Red Wings had won twelve straight games,in scoring four goals,or more, each game, going back to November 26th,2010,including the game we saw- a 5-3 win, against San Jose,on November 30th... not much good last night... a real stinker!!!!!!!

Monday, January 10, 2011

Red Wings' game score...

Colorado 5,Detroit 4... first loss in six road games... honestly, strange game, lousy first period, giving up four goals,of six goals,in first period(Colorado,4-2,after one period)... analysis,tomorrow...

commentary...

Rule 48.1 states a blindside,or lateral hit to an opponent, where targeting the head,and/or the principal point of contact,is not permitted...
there is the rule that Tom Kostopoulos got suspended, for breaking jaw,of Brad Stuart, but neither the Calgary Flames' GM,Jay Feaster,or Kostopoulos, himself, thinks that he did not do anything wrong, stating that,"I am extremely disappointed in the League's ruling,as i believe that i have not done anything illegal...",Tom Kostopoulos
"While we are sorry the player was injured, but we maintain,in the (NHL) hearing, the hit was a legal check, the player was batting at the puck, and Tom hit him in chest, and was following through on the hit",Jay Feaster,Flames general manager... he did not even have the guts,to even name Brad Stuart,as the player injured... what a disgusting rhetoric, and statements made, than even a Calgary Flames blog(Matchsticks, and Gasoline)could not believe the statements, and simply ripped both on their blog, and even giving sympathy,to Brad Stuart... true hockey fans should be outraged, and disgusted.... i am... i would be very upset, even if it was a player on the Flames, who was injured, because it was deliberate,on Kostopoulos' part, period!!!!!!!!!!!

Red Wings' news...

Red Wings/Avalanche,tonight,at 6:30,in Denver... analysis tonight,after game...

Sunday, January 9, 2011

NHL news...

Tom Kostopoulos was suspended six games,by the NHL,for his brutal intentional hit to Brad Stuart's jaw, breaking his jaw,in process,in game in Calgary, between Flames/Red Wings, won by Red Wings,5-4,in a shootout... it will cost him $29,569.92,in salary, but i love the length of suspension, because six games is not chicken feathers,in terms of NHL suspensions...

side notes...

last night, both goaltenders in Vancouver were good, but Jimmy Howard, was spectacular in goal, making many highlight reel saves, and basically was the best Red Wings' player,in the building, last night....

Saturday, January 8, 2011

correction...

on a goaltender interference call, when puck goes into net,and goal is disallowed, like tonight's Red Wings game,in overtime, referees have option,of giving penalty,or not giving a penalty...

Red Wings' game score,and commentary...

Red Wings 2,Canucks 1,shootout win.... short-handed Red Wings beat Vancouver,in a very good game... Johan Franzen scored in third period,42 seconds into period,on power play, for Red Wings... Red Wings played better in third period, and actually had a goal disallowed,in overtime, because of a legitimate goalie's interference call(there was no penalty, just goal disallowed),on a Niklas Kronwall shot,on the Red Wings... no complaints on call... Jiri Hudler scored only shootout goal, when he hit a wicked slapshot, past Roberto Luongo, from about 25 feet... Referees have option,of disallowing goal, with penalty,or without penalty,on goalie interference...

game in progress--2nd period

Vancouver 1,Detroit 0,after two periods... good game, both teams playing chippy and rather nasty, seems like a playoff game... no one giving an inch... Red Wings on power play, with 1:53 left on it,going into third period... Daniel Sedin scored power play goal,on a rocket, from left circle area... Kevin Bieksa wanted to fight Tomas Holmstrom, after first period, saying,"Just one time",to him,and meaning it... both teams have played well, but Canucks have had better of the play, but it seems like a fifteen round fight...

Walleye(ECHL) news...

Toledo Walleye,of the East Coast Hockey League, are 13-15-2-1,six points behind the Wheeling(WV) Nailers... team is shared by the Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks(boo,hiss!!!!!)...

Griffiths' news...

Grand Rapids Griffiths are 17-17-1-4;fourth place in the North Division,of the Western Conference, six points behind Hamilton Bulldogs,in the American Hockey League...

Friday, January 7, 2011

injury update...

Brad Stuart suffered an jaw injury(broken jaw)in collision with Calgary Flames' Tom Kostopoulos, besides Detroit net, midway in third period.... Kostopoulos received a roughing penalty on play, but honestly,Stuart left a giant pool of blood on ice, when he got up,so if he does not get suspended, that is a crime...

Red Wings' news...

Detroit/Vancouver,tomorrow night,in Vancouver... game score, and analysis tomorrow night,or Sunday morning... top two teams,in Western Conference playing each other, tomorrow night

Red Wings' game score, and analysis of game...

Red Wings 5,Flames 4,shootout win... Red Wings have won five straight road games, and actually never led in game, until shootout... came back from a 4-2 deficit, midway through game, and fought off a four-on three power play,in overtime... Brian Rafalski scored first two goals,of his season;last one, tied game at 4 all... Todd Bertuzzi scored only shootout goal... Flames came out strong, and led,2-1,after first period,and,4-3,after two periods, but Red Wings refused to give game up in third, pressuring Calgary, throughout third period, and Jimmy Howard made a beautiful save,on Jerome Iginla,in overtime,to basically save game for Red Wings... Iginla took a nanosecond too long to settle down the puck, before shooting puck, giving Howard just enough time,to make a flailing arm save,on a shot that looked like it was past Howard... Curtis Glencross scored two goals for Calgary, along with Anton Babchuk, and Jerome Iginla, who scored a goal, and had an assist,too... Darren Helm, and Patrick Eaves scored goals, for Red Wings, and Henrik Zetterberg has a nine game point streak...

Detroit/Calgary,tomorrow...

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

commentary...

Todd Bertuzzi scored two goals, and Red Wings scored twice,in forty four seconds, late in third period,to pull away from Edmonton,in a good game... Edmonton tied game at 3 all, midway into third period, erasing a 3-1 lead going into third period,by peppering Chris Osgood, and pressuring Detroit,in their own zone, throughout the third period... Osgood let in a soft goal, off a face-off,in the Red Wings' zone(the fourth goal allowed, off a face off,in last three games)... the puck squeezed through Osgood's pads, and legs,to tie game,at 3,and Edmonton was coming on,but Red Wings scored twice,in forty four seconds in last four minutes,to seal win... Red Wings played well in first two periods, but got sloppy early, and midway,in third period, until Mike Babcock got very upset with the team... third win for Red Wings,in three games,so far, against Edmonton... Edmonton is a very young team, and improving, but six of their last seven losses, have been by one goal, which means that they are in games, but do not know how to put teams away, but honestly they will be a terror,in years to come... Edmonton had game on their sticks midway in third period, and had Detroit reeling, but Red Wings steadied themselves, and in "money time"(the last three minutes),they played like the Red Wings... over the last 42 games, when scoring four goals,or more, they have a record of 38-1-3... Henrik Zetterberg,Kris Draper, and Darren Helm, also scored for Red Wings, and Todd Bertuzzi's second goal was the game winning goal... Red Wings are second in Western Conference, but tied in points, behind Vancouver, who have won six games in row(Vancouver leads Western Conference, because of number of games played),but Red Wings lead the Central Division, over St. Louis, and in tie, with St. Louis, the defending Stanley Cup Champions,Chicago Blackhawks,by ten points... the Blackhawks are in deep trouble, because they have played more games than most teams, and they have been very inconsistent in winning, throughout the season...
