commentary...
after Ben Scrivens,of the Edmonton Oilers, shut out the San Jose Sharks,3-0,on an unbelievable 59 shots(20 shots in the first,22 shots in the second, and 17 shots in the third),Sharks' head coach Todd McLellan said some classy things for the goaltender's effort, noting that he deserved the first, second and third star of the game, among other things... i may not like the Sharks, but what the head coach said was total class...
commentary...
ever see ants run around??? that is the real reason i do not like games, like the NHL Stadium Series, because to have a seat, even in the first row of the stadium(50-100 feet away from the ice),let alone in the nosebleed section,is not fun, even with binoculars... i love outdoor hockey,do not get me wrong, but sitting in an outdoor stadium, looking at the scoreboard nearly 100% of the time is like seeing ants run around...

commentary...
earlier in the season,i ripped the Red Wings for lack of real team effort... last night, they suffered their sixth team shutout, and got beat 5-0... the real differences in the game were two-fold:at least three shots went off the iron of the goal, two crossbars, and a post(the shots off the iron, according to NHL rules,do not count, unfortunately),for the Red Wings, and the Flyers' goaltender Steve Mason, who has shut out the Red Wings four times, including last night, was spectacular in net... the Flyers did out-play the Red Wings(more team hustle and seemed quicker throughout the game),and got all the good bounces... have to give credit to them, and realize that a bounce or two the Red Wings' way,and the game would have been a closer game... i am not saying that the Red Wings would have won,but it would have been closer... one thing:Red Wings' goaltender Jonas Gustavsson really had a very bad game,period...

Red Wings' game score,and comments...
Flyers 5,Red Wings 0... sixth shutout for the Red Wings, and sixteenth game that Red Wings have scored one goal,or less,in a NHL game, this season... punchless, and inconsistent offense has been a weakness of the Red Wings most of the season... an ugly game,period...
blog statement...
i will take day off, except to note tonight's score of the Red Wings/Flyers game...

Red Wings' news...
Red Wings/Philadelphia Flyers,tomorrow... as i type,Red Wings are in second wild card slot, but only three points behind Toronto for third place(guaranteed playoff spot)... top three teams in each division gets a guaranteed playoff spot... Philadelphia is right behind the Red Wings,so tomorrow's game is very important...

Red Wings' game score,and comment...
Panthers 5,Red Wings 4,shootout loss... got a real lousy point... they collapse with a 4-2 lead, late in the third period... an ugly lousy game...

commentary...
the Red Wings have started to win at home(winning three of last four games),which is bad news for the NHL... now, three points, out of third place in the Atlantic Division(guaranteed playoff spot),behind the Montreal Canadiens however, lately, the Canadiens are having trouble stopping pucks... Canadian Olympic team member, goaltender Carey Price tied a nearly 70 year Canadiens' record,by allowing four,or more, goals in last six games... one of the goaltenders who share that record is Georges Vezina(played for Montreal from 1910-1911,to 1925-26(he played one period of the 1925-1926 opener, collapsed in second period, retired because of tuberculosis, and died on March 27 ,1926),the namesake for the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender in the NHL... well, back to the game, the Red Wings dominated the second and third period,in playing very good team defense, and the Canadiens played give away in their defensive zone most of the night, and Carey could not stop a puck last night, when it was needed, and the Red Wings swarmed all over Montreal most of the last two periods, and it really could have gotten very, very ugly-score wide,in the game... the Canadiens are a good team, but like the Red Wings, they go through stretches of very bad play... the Red Wings still have seven players on injured reserve,so they may sputter along for a week or two more then get healthy, just before or after the Olympic break... so,watch out,NHL...

commentary...
honestly, going into last night's game between the Blackhawks, and the Red Wings,i thought that the Red Wings were going to lose, because they were missing ten regulars out of their lineup, including both opening day goaltenders(Jimmy Howard, and Jonas Gustavsson)... however,i forgot one thing:the Blackhawks do not like the Red Wings, and the Red Wings do not like the Blackhawks;it was an old Central Division matchup... so,Darren Helm,Jonathan Ericsson, and Gustavsson returned to the undermanned Red Wings' lineup... with nine minutes left the Red Wings were down 2-0,on a goal that deflected off Marian Hossa's shin, and into the net,and the second goal was almost as bizarre as the one that tied the Kings' game, not in air time, but the puck bounced around like a jumping bean,or even a hot potato,as Gustavsson tried to corral puck, but the puck avoided him,as Andrew Shaw swept puck into net,for goal number two... at that point, down 2-0,the Red Wings could have folded easily, but the Red Wings scored twice in 6:26,of game time,to tie game,at two, after one period... the last two periods were your typical old Central Division dogfight, with neither team giving an inch, period, with both teams exchanging goals, and leads, and game ended regulation tied at four, and in a shootout,Darren Helm,in the sixth round, ended a eventful shootout that saw Todd Bertuzzi score a shootout goal that tied shootout,at two... he was the last of the three picked Red Wings originally to be in the shootout... even then, the Red Wings refused to lose game, and they showed a lot of grit... my opinion:the problem with the Red Wings, this season is that they have had major injuries, and the team has not been healthy most of the year... however,no excuses:they showed the heart of a true champion, undermanned, but never quitting...

answer to a question...
to answer a question from the cheap seats:fifteen games is the number of games that the Red Wings have scored one or fewer goals in a game, including three 1-0 losses, two of them back to back... they have been shut out five times... they have eight major starters out with injuries, including both opening day roster starting goaltenders... OY VEY!!!!!!!

blog statement...
even though the Red Wings play the Blues tonight,i will not note score, until after midnight,or tomorrow morning, because of the memory of my dearly departed uncle Bob,who died fifteen years ago,today... see you tomorrow...

commentary,on Karma...
this is a current team in the NHL:a team that had not won a game in one week;had not scored a goal in just under 153 minutes of game time;had nine starters out due to injuries, ranging from the "dreaded" upper body injury,to a concussion;had a home record of 6-10-7(before last night),and was still only two points out of a playoff spot(before last night);had lost eight straight home games, and had multiple losing streaks of five games,or more... now they complain about a goal that was crazy and should have been reviewed, but honestly no referee saw puck hit the net,but yet they all saw the puck go into the net... to the Los Angeles Kings, they are a class organization and team to not really complain, and just play,i give kudos... however,to other people(the NHL,and to the pundits)i say "tough crap",do all the complaining that you want... to all the teams that have had good breaks go for them, against the Red Wings,in the past(Dallas Stars,on a referee's(Mike Leggo) call from 30+yards away,on a shootout, and the San Jose Sharks on actually a similar play in the NHL playoffs, that actually hit the Red Wings' goaltender square in the back, after popping up in air,and puck went into net, just like the puck that hit Jonathan Quick, and went into the net, both years ago),i say that is hockey, weird bounces, and plays happen,so to the pundits and complainers,i deeply say,"Karma Bites!!!!!!!!" doesn't it,people??? i am simply smiling....

Red Wings' game score...
Red Wings 3,Kings 2,shootout win... Red Wings mob Jimmy Howard.... commentary,later,tonight....
crazy,nutty goal of the year...
CRAZY GOAL OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!! Red Wings shoot puck, deflected off net(out of bounds),but puck directly comes down, goes off Jonathan Quick's head and back, and goes into the net,in the last minute of game... referees missed puck going off the net,and call it a goal... Red Wings 2,Kings 2,in overtime...
NHL news,and Red Wings' news...
it is Hockey Day in Canada on CBC,and NHL Network... Los Angeles Kings/Red Wings,tonight... commentary after game... Kings are 4-1-1 in last six games, but the one loss for Kings was a 3-1 loss in Los Angeles,to the Red Wings...

a real tragedy...
this is a true story:14 year old Brittanie Cecil died days after getting hit in the head by a puck, during the Calgary Flames 3-2 shootout win, over the Columbus Blue Jackets,on March 8,2002... it was shot on a ricochet into the crowd... she left game with a headache, but died later from factors related to the puck hitting her head... it is the only fan related death during the history of the NHL... it is the reason that you see nets over the glass at both ends of the rink...
note on NHL Stadium Series...
i forget to mention that there is a NHL Stadium Series game at Soldier Field,in Chicago, between the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Pittsburgh Penguins... all the Stadium Series' games are between February 25th,and March 2nd,in Chicago,New York,Los Angeles, and Vancouver B.C.,Canada...

Red Wings' game score,and comments...
Rangers 1,Red Wings 0... great defensive game for both goaltenders... only a deflected puck off Brian Lashoff's stick got past Jimmy Howard, credited to Mats Zuccarello... second straight 1-0 loss, that does suck, but Howard has played spectacularly in goal...
Red Wings' news...
Red Wings/New York Rangers,tonight... will note score, but will comment tomorrow...

commentary...
the NHL is a money-grubbing enterprise... after having the Bridgestone Winter Classic, between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs,on January 1st(they made $20 million),they now have what they call the Stadium Series, and the Heritage Classic... the Stadium Series are a series of outdoor games, where the New York Rangers play the New Jersey Devils, and then the New York Islanders at Yankee Stadium, but before that, the Los Angeles Kings play the Anaheim Ducks at(guess where???)drumroll, please,Dodger Stadium!!!!! what a real joke,period... the Heritage Classic is a outdoor game between the Vancouver Canucks, and the Ottawa Senators, but that game is for Canada,so i can stomach that... but Dodger Stadium??? come on,NHL... you crossed the line between a major league, and a simple money-grubbing enterprise... to have an outdoor game,at Dodger Stadium,is a flat out joke... that is my opinion, period, and if you disagree with me,i simply do not care a whit, about your opinion....

Red Wings/Rangers,January 16th,2014... Los Angeles Kings/Red Wings,Saturday,January 18th,2014...
Sunday, January 12, 2014
Red Wings' game score,and comments...
Ducks 1,Red Wings 0... for a depleted team due to injuries,Red Wings played a very good game... Anaheim had best record in NHL,and are the only NHL team NOT to lose in regulation,so far,at home, with a record of 19-0-2... the Ducks are averaging 3.5 goals a game,so far this season,so the Red Wings played a very good game,period...
commentary...
the Kings scored first on a controversial goal, when the Kings interfered with Jimmy Howard,on a two man advantage on an early power play, but after that Howard stopped every shot(44 of 45 shots, overall),and Riley Sheahan,Tomas Tatar, and Dan Cleary scored three unanswered goals... Tatar and Cleary scored 5:20 apart,in the third period,to pull away from a 1-1 tie, after two periods... Red Wings were missing Pavel Datsyuk,Darren Heim,Johan Franzen, and Daniel Alfordsson from the roster, because of injury...
Red Wings' news...
Red Wings/Anaheim Ducks,tonight... a very tough team to play, with a depleted team roster, because of injuries...

commentary...
i honestly am mystified by the Red Wings' play this season... they are very difficult to watch, because they are so inconsistent... they are in the playoff hunt,in the Eastern Conference, but they seem to take teams too lightly, and lose games that they should win... as for last night's game against the San Jose Sharks, they looked very good in the first period(had a very good "road" period, tied at one),but then they collapsed in the second period, giving up three easy, and soft goals to the Sharks, and then mailed it in the third period, looking like the Charleston Chiefs, from the movie,"Slap Shot"(a great hockey movie, and comedy, and an underrated Paul Newman role)... if you are surprised by my reaction as a fan,do not be,because i am truly very sad in watching them, and yet, they have not played up to their potential,period...

Red Wings' game score,and comments...
Sharks 4,Red Wings 1... cheap shots,on both teams galore... a very ugly second period for Jimmy Howard, and the Red Wings, giving up three soft and ugly goals, and looking like Howard's usual game, this year-all manure,no beef... can not figure the stinking night out... both teams do not definitely like each other...
Red Wings' news...
Red Wings/San Jose Sharks,tonight... last time,1-0,Sharks' shootout win... what a game...

comments...
the NHL's Department of Player Safety is a flat out joke... Patrick Eaves,of the Red Wings, got check crossed in the jaw by Joffery Lupul, during the Bridgestone Winter Classic,on New Year's Day,and got fined a measly $10,000(the most under the collective bargaining agreement(CBA))... Eaves suffered a broken jaw,and a concussion, last year, with a similar injury... my opinion:Lupul is a real piece of work, and one of the dirtiest players in the NHL...

IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships...
Rasmus Ristolainen scored 9:42,into overtime,to propel Team Finland to an upset 3-2 victory, over Team Sweden,in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships,to win the gold medal... Sweden won the silver medal, and Team Russia beat Team Canada 2-1,for the bronze medal... in the all-time series,Team Sweden and Team Finland are tied 15-15,with two ties,in thirty two games...

Red Wings' game score,and commentary...
Red Wings 5,Stars 1... best defensive game in a month, and overall best game, perhaps this year... a much needed two points... Red Wings' captain Henrik Zetterberg scored two goals,as Red Wings dominated game from opening puck drop,as Red Wings broke game open, late in first period, with two goals in fourteen seconds,to go from a 1-1 tie to a 3-1 lead after one period, and after that, the Stars collapsed... a rather weak team effort...
IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships...
for the first time in twelve years,Team Finland beat Team Canada,in IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships,5-1... they play Team Sweden in gold medal game...

Red Wings' schedule...
the next two games for the Red Wings are tomorrow(January 4th,2014),against Dallas Stars, and the annual trip to San Jose,to play the Sharks,in San Jose,on January 9th,2014... they are on a four game road trip...
Thursday, January 2, 2014
commentary...
the fact that the Red Wings have had the first half of the season, looking like an inconsistent buffoon of a team, because they are having trouble winning games at home is driving fans of the team crazy, nutty, and they are miserable watching the Red Wings struggle this season(at least,i am)... the main excuse could be the fact that the Red Wings moved to the Eastern Conference, but the Red Wings would not make excuses... the Red Wings are 6-10-7 at "home"(6-10-6,at Joe Louis Arena),and they lost,3-2,in a shootout in Ann Arbor, outdoors,at Michigan Stadium, yesterday, which really sucked... they have dropped to the second wild card slot(fifth in the Atlantic Division),but because the "top-heavy" Eastern Conference, they should make the Stanley Cup playoffs... they have eighteen games at home left, this season, and to secure the Stanley Cup playoffs, they need a winning streak,and/or a good second half record at home, because they do have one of the best road records in the NHL,which is very strange... finally,it is like they have nerves,at home, and can not seem to get it going at home... as a fan,i really hope that they win the vast majority of the eighteen games left at home...

OOPS for USA Hockey...
a funny thing happened when USA Hockey tried to text Ryan Kesler,of the Vancouver Canucks,to tell him that he had been selected to the U.S. Olympic hockey team... he had changed his number,so they got ahold of a 67 year old Canadian, who told them that,"i am a 67 year old from Vancouver, and i would like to play for you... he said,"in fact,i think Canada would be even happier if i played for you"... the real USA Olympic hockey team got a big laugh out of it...
Red Wings' game score,and comment......
Maple Leafs 3,Red Wings 2,shootout... another shootout, another stupid loss...
commentary...
i honestly do not like pre-game shows, simply because of pundits, who honestly have no clue on how to play the games, and they blather on about something that simply makes no sense... as for Colin Cowherd,of ESPN radio, ranking the NFL teams on odds of winning Super Bowl XLVIII,he has as much knowledge as a amoeba,on a glass slide, and for example:me saying that the Red Wings would win the Stanley Cup,on the opening day of any NHL season, would also make no sense... there are too many strange things that will, and could,go on,in the season,to make that boast... for another example:who would have thought that the USA would beat the Soviets,in the 1980 Olympics, and go on to win the Olympic gold medal, days later ??? by the way,the Russians still have not picked up their silver medals, just like the U.S. Olympic basketball team did not do,in 1976,in "the extra three seconds game",when they were robbed by the referees, and Olympic officials... my point is that no one really knows what will happen in the future, and it is why you play the game??
comment...
i shall note game score, from Red Wings' game,today... commentary will be written up,tonight,or tomorrow morning...
