NHL board of governors approve head shot rule...

the penalty for shoulder shots to the head,is a five minute major penalty, plus a game misconduct, and possible extra discipline(suspension) by the NHL,because of severity of the blow to head... if concussed by head shot, expect suspension by league... example: playoffs:Scott Stevens laying out Eric Lindros, during a Devils/Flyers series... Lindros did play again, but not for the Flyers... animosity between Lindros' father, and family, and Flyers' front office, mostly Flyers' GM,and Hall of Famer,Bobby Clarke caused a trade,by the Flyers,to New York Rangers, because family lived in Toronto, and family wanted Eric to play in Maple Leaf blue and white, and Flyers refused... Lindros played three years in New York, and then played a year in Toronto... he finished his career in Dallas, but he was never the same player, after the head shot,by Scott Stevens, suffering many concussions, after that day...

NHL salary cap...

NHL salary cap is set at $59.4 million,up $2.6 million from last season... salary cap are used by teams to equalize pay for players... the bottom limit is $43.4 million/per team for this season...

NHL draft... 25 jun. 7 ET.,and 26 jun....

NHL draft will be covered by me... Red Wings' picks will be noted, and hopefully i will write out first round for you... unlike the NFL draft, most picks will go to college, junior hockey,AHL,or ECHL,and even European teams,or Russia, but rights will be owned by team drafted to,and most of the picks will be in training camps throughout the NHL...

commentary...

most pundits are critical of the selection of Dino Ciccarelli,as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, class of 2010,because of many factors,no Stanley Cups, for example, but to tell you the truth, not everyone in the HHOF has his/her name on the Stanley Cup... however, not many players have 608 goals, and 1,200 points,in 1,232 games-about a point/per game, which is great, and for 19 years,he played with heart, and grit... he was not the classic hockey player, but he did play all-out for the teams that he played for,in that span of time... he was a gritty player-like Chris Pronger-hated to play against him,but loved him to be on your team... spent four years in Detroit, but that was not the reason that i liked him,and respected him... respect was earned by him,in my eyes, because he was a tough player, and he gave 100%,to teams that he played for,in 19 seasons... way to go,Dino!!!!! and to the pundits, who criticized his induction, like DX would say,i have two words for you... love the wrestling notation...

NHL awards...

Pavel Datsyuk,Detroit Red Wings-Selke Trophy(best defenseman with a defensive component)
Duncan Keith,Chicago Blackhawks-Norris Trophy(best defenseman)
Henrik Sedin,Vancouver Canucks-Hart Trophy(MVP)
Ryan Miller,Buffalo Sabres-Vezina Trophy(best goaltender)
Tyler Myers,Buffalo Sabres-Calder Trophy(rookie of the year)
Shane Doan,Phoenix Coyotes-King Clancy Memorial Trophy(best example of a player,on and off ice,and help to community)
Alexander Ovechkin,Washington Capitals-Ted Lindsay Award(most outstanding player-only voted on by the players)
Steven Stamkos,Tampa Bay Lightning,and Sidney Crosby,Pittsburgh Penguins-Rocket Richard Trophy(most goals)
Henrik Sedin,Vancouver Canucks-Art Ross Trophy(scoring champion)
Martin St. Louis,Tampa Bay Lightning-Lady Byng Trophy(most gentlemanly player)
Jose Theodore,Washington Capitals-Masterton Trophy(inspirational player-lost son,at two months-would have been one yesterday)
Martin Brodeur,New Jersey Devils-Jennings Trophy(least goals allowed)
Dave Tippett,Phoenix Coyotes- Jack Adams Trophy(coach of the year)
Sidney Crosby,Pittsburgh Penguins-Mark Messier Leadership Award
Ryan Miller,Buffalo Sabres-NHL Foundation Player Award

Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2010...

Angela Davis,Cammy Granato,Darryl Seaman,Jim Devellano, and Dino Ciccarelli were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame... Angela Davis was a 4-time World Championship gold medalist for Canada, who played mostly,in the era before women's hockey took off... Cammy Granato was a 15 year member of the U.S. national team... Darryl Seaman was a founding owner of the Calgary Flames, who died last year,of prostate cancer... Jim Devellano is the current senior VP of the Detroit Red Wings, who has seven Stanley Cup rings,to his credit(four with Red Wings, and three with the Islanders)... the late Darryl "Doc" Seaman, and Devellano wee put into the builder category... Ciccarelli played for five teams(Minnesota North Stars,Washington Capitals,Detroit Red Wings,Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers),and had 608 goals, with 592 assists, for 1,200 points,in 1,232 games... he was a tough player who would drop the gloves, when needed, but with a goal scorer's touch... not many of those around... Congrats to HHOF class of 2010...

Niedermayer retires...

Scott Niedermayer retired after 18 seasons, playing with two teams,New Jersey, and Anaheim... i dislike Anaheim, but never disliked Niedermayer... he was a class person on,and off,the ice... he is the only player,in NHL history,to win a Olympic gold medal,World Championship,World Junior Championship,World Cup,Memorial Cup,and a Stanley Cup... what an array of championships!... He won four Stanley Cups(three, with New Jersey, and one, with Anaheim)...He even played against his own brother, when New Jersey played Anaheim,in 2003,in the Stanley Cup Final that year... New Jersey won that year,in seven games, with a 3-0 shutout... would have loved to be a fly on the wall, after that season... i respect players like him, because he was total class on the ice,and off the ice... a tough nut to crack, and gave 100% of himself,to the team that he played for... he was one of the best defensemen,in NHL history, even winning a Norris Trophy in his career... in my opinion,he will be in the Hockey Hall of Fame,in Toronto,as soon as he is up for election,in three years... if he is not, there is a major robbery,in the NHL...

NHL news...

the competition committee of the NHL recommended that blind side hits to the head become five minute major penalties... that includes most hits to the head, like the Boston Bruins' Marc Savard head hunting,by the Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke,on March 7,2010,which put Savard out for the season(but he came back for the playoffs).... the NHL Board of Governors have to vote on the recommendation, which is basically a done deal... my opinion is that it is about time... concussions are a serious problem in sports, especially the NHL,and even though i love hockey,in general,it is a great day that they did this, because to see a player laid out like a side of beef,is something that always has bothered me,but a good body check is something to see,and a thing of real beauty, but elbows to the head, and checking players into the boards head first gives hockey a real bad name... Chris Pronger,of the Flyers, then of the Ducks, gave many questionable shots to the head, during a playoff series, with Detroit,in 2007,and 2008,which would be illegal(a five minute major, when voted on)... he basically mugged Red Wings, left and right, during both series... he was voted,"the dirtiest player in the NHL",by the players,in 2009,and 2010... you can tell that i dislike Pronger,as a player, can't you?

NHL:200 ft. by 85 ft.;IIHF:200 ft. by 98 ft... NHL corner radius of 28 ft... IIHF corner radius of 14 ft... goal line is 4 ft. from boards,on both sides...NHL:blue line:64 ft. to goal line... IIHF:blue line:56 ft. to goal line... distance from blue line to blue line:NHL:50 ft... IIHF:56 ft...

what is icing?

when a player on a team, who is on defense,in front of their goaltender, shoots a puck untouched down to the other end of rink... in NHL,two players chase puck, and if offensive player touches puck first,in chase,it is called "icing the puck"... in some leagues, you do not have to chase the puck;it is called,"no touch icing"... if player shoots puck without crossing center ice line,it is also icing,too..

tough Central Division... watch out NHL...

i actually looked at the NHL teams,at the beginning of last season, and i ranked them,1 to 30,and i honestly thought that Chicago had enough firepower, and defense,to win the Western Conference... their only weakness was in goal,i thought... was i wrong, ultimately? yes... when Chicago shut down Detroit, twice,in back to back games,at least, for Detroit,it was back to back games(two 3-0 shutouts,in a home and home series of games),they were the team to beat in the Western Conference,to me... when Chicago got off to a great start, they were not going to be caught,by anybody,in my book... San Jose won the conference,on last day of season, because of a Red Wings win, over Chicago,in regulation... had Chicago gotten, somehow, into overtime, that day, against Red Wings, they would have won the Western Conference, because they actually won more games than San Jose(52 wins,to 51 wins),but my opinion had not changed one bit, about Chicago, going into playoffs... the toughest division, overall,in the NHL,is the Central Division... points to back up claim:Two Stanley Cup Championships,in last three years, three straight Western Conference Champions came out of the Central Division, and every team in the division have tasted playoff hockey,at least once,in last three years... the team coming out of the Central, and maybe the second place team,is going to be super tough to beat,in the playoffs, every year... point is that two times the Red Wings won Stanley,(4 times in last 13 years)they did not even win their own division... i dislike Chicago very much, because they are our most-hated rival, but honestly,i have to respect them... they are black, blue, and bruised teams, coming out of their own division, every year, and who have been battle tested teams, going into the playoffs every year.... all the teams can beat up on each other, and they have a pattern of defense(Detroit's),that they use on each other,30 games a year(6 games/team/year/in division),that they have perfected their defense, against each other, and so when they play other teams, they play tougher than many teams,so when Chicago was in the conference finals,it was no surprise to me(only thing i thought Detroit would get past San Jose,to meet them,in conference finals, but that is spilled milk),but Chicago was the best team,in the West, and Philadelphia would lose in six games,(see blog/5-29-10)and a perfect prediction...

Ken Dryden,of the 1970-1971 Montreal Canadiens(won Stanley Cup);won Calder Trophy,in 1971-1972

NHL trivia...

who is the only player in NHL history,to win the Conn Smythe trophy(playoff MVP),before winning the Calder Trophy(rookie of year)?

once every ten years,Stanley decided,in overtime...

Chicago won Stanley Cup,4-3,in overtime... great game... finally great goaltending, and a superb shot to win Stanley,by Patrick Kane... in fact, shot was not noticed to be in,because it was stuck, actually, under the net padding, and went through the pads of Leighton, but replays showed the puck went in,but Flyers came back time after time, until Blackhawks put a stake in Philadelphia's heart,finally... title of post comes from the fact that the last time Stanley, was decided,in a overtime game, was exactly ten years ago,on June 9th,2000,when New Jersey beat Dallas,in overtime... a strong, but hard-fought game throughout, but Chicago came out flying, and just played a near-perfect game, until Philadelphia tied it,late in third period, but it did not crush Chicago, and just made Blackhawks determined to put the final dagger into Philadelphia's tired team, with a shot to remember,by Patrick Kane... a very enjoyable series to watch, but,at times,a very ugly series to watch... of all the periods played in this series, only twice did the teams have a totally scoreless period, amazing? this series was one of a kind, and defense did not win the championship... both teams kept shooting the puck, until one team finally got tired, and the other team won, with a shot for the ages... every Stanley Cup winning goal will be shown over and over,forever....

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

commentary

this is an exciting Stanley Cup Finals matchup, between Chicago, and Philadelphia... no doubt, but it is also the ugliest defensive series, since the 80's-era Edmonton Oilers, who scored,at will,or seemed to.. neither team can seem to stop a puck... they both have goaltenders, who could play in the 80's,but this series is that both teams have goaltenders, who have goals against average, above 3.00,which is terrible, except in the era of the Edmonton Oilers,of the 80's... only two periods have been scoreless,in the entire series,so far, which is really amazing... can anyone stop a puck, doubt it,but it has been very ugly,period...

Monday, June 7, 2010

Hossa,Kopecky,and Leino...

there are three players who, only last year, and in one case, played for the Red Wings, earlier this season, who are playing for Stanley, this postseason... Marian Hossa,Tomas Kopecky, and Ville Leino.... most of this blurb is about Kopecky, and Leino, but Hossa will be mentioned, because he has been in the Finals, for three different teams, the last three years, which may be an NHL record... he played for the Penguins, who lost to my beloved Red Wings,in 2008,for Stanley, and then played for the Red Wings, who lost to the Penguins,in seven heart-breaking games,in 2009... he then signed with the Blackhawks, for a 12 year stint... he has been a rent-a-player the last three years,so good riddance, but people have second guessed the Red Wings, about dealing away Leino, but let me defend it... Kopecky also signed, with Blackhawks, after last season, but Leino was a case of a player, who honestly played sloppily for the Wings, and even though Holland did not want to trade him,to Philadelphia,it was time, because Franzen was coming back from an injury, and Leino was expendable... is he the player, the Red Wings had,or is he the player, who set the rookie record for goals, and assists,in the playoffs, for the Flyers, this year? only time will tell... i have respect for him, because he showed class, when he was traded... he was a healthy scratch so many times for the Wings that Mike Babcock, the Red Wings' coach, was very frustrated by his actions,or his play, for the Red Wings, because he kept turning over the puck, and even though,he had talent,he just did not show it many times, for the Red Wings... good luck,Ville... see you, next season...

Sunday, June 6, 2010

Flyers stomped,and embarrassed,7-4....

Chicago stomped Philadelphia,in first period,by scoring three goals, then not allowing Flyers any great momentum,in second, and third period... even though,Philadelphia scored four goals, every goal that they scored was answered,by Chicago,in a 7-4 one-sided game...... goaltending for the Flyers was abysmal, and that has been the key to series,on both teams,so far... which goaltender was the worst for the night of the games, depending on who won... Flyers dug a hole, and never was able to dig themselves out of the hole,or make a run at Blackhawks during the game... defense wins championships, normally, but both teams have honestly played pathetic defense at times... can anybody play defense, and stop a puck, from going into their net? not so far.... i do not like either team, but i really respect both teams, but the key in game six,on Wednesday, will be who can play defense, and stop a puck... Chicago has the edge, but can anybody steal a game, with a score of,1-0,or,2-1... Philadelphia's goaltending has basically sucked throughout the Stanley Cup Finals, and if Chicago can stop playing giveaway hockey,in Philadelphia, they may raise Stanley,Wednesday, but again, who really knows who is going to win this series, and who cares, because this is the ugliest Stanley Cup Finals series that i have seen,in a very long time... this is basically disgusting hockey, except, for one game....

Philadelphia ran past,stomped Chicago,5-3...

Chicago got beat,by Philadelphia,5-3.... did not play well for two periods, and made a late run, scored two goals,in last seven minutes,to close within,4-3,but goaltending, and defense sucked most of the night, for Chicago, giving up easy goals, and Chicago played like crap, very soft, and Philadelphia took advantage all night... series tied,at two games apiece.. if Chicago plays like that, next game, they are in deep trouble, but it is a best of three, for Stanley... game on,and series on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i really respect Philadelphia, and really dislike them... they played a very good third period, but could not score the would be tying goal,on Chicago, because Niemi would not allow the goal... in both third periods,of game one,and two,Niemi was the difference,in goal, allowing only one goal overall,in third period,in the series,so far... Chicago is 5-0,in one goal games,in playoffs,as of right now... defense wins championships, like i have said many times, and, even though,Chicago won game one,6-5,they did not allow goal,in third period,of game one,and won game... they allowed only one goal,in third period,of game two,and won game two,2-1... if they can do the same in game three, they will win Stanley... having a 2-0 lead,in games, gives them a cushion, but Chicago does not see it that way... they know down deep that they won both games, with great third periods, defensively, but Flyers are not dead,at all... ask Boston,if they were dead, when down,0-3,earlier in the playoffs... they are still in shock, after losing series,in Boston...
